SEQUEL
(For Kathryn who plays on our bearskin rug)

Nanook has been sold.
Emily, a white girl in Ottawa,
bought him at the Snow Goose
Josephee feels rich.
He has five hundred dollars.
He can buy new clothes
for his wife and children.
In Ottawa, Emily runs her fingers
tenderly over the bear's features.
She smiles at Nanook.
She doesn't regret spending all
her holiday savings on him.

Emily is happy.
Josephee and his family are happy.
Only Nanook looks cross.
