INUKSHUK
(for Joanne, who has left her mark on the Northland)

Under the spell of the North,
she walks along the frozen Arctic shore,
marvels at June icebergs rearing
monster heads into a bluer than blue sky.

Wheeling, she faces landward to mountains
glacier capped. At her feet,
she sees a pussy willow, stoops, examines it -
four inches long, clinging
horizontally to the scant warm earth
covering great rocks and ice.

This is Auyuittuq -
Auyuittuq - the land that
never melts.
Mounting a slim rock pinnacle,
she stands - an inukshuk
marking the way of love
held forever
in the mystery and magic
of this northern land.
