  Autumn Haiku

Cerulean dome
broken by falling ash leaves
and circling cranes.

  *

The meadowlark's nest
is empty. Here, here, and here
prairie roses bloom.

  *

Stone frog by the pond
almost hidden by the fall
of aster petals.

  *

The buffalo trail
fall-overgrown; a mouse nest
in a whitened skull.

  *

In a small clearing
by the deserted lake cabin,
a child's running shoe.

  *

A-top chokecherry trees,
hungry grosbeaks chattering -
crow flocks flying south.
