THE KING IS DEAD
I couldn't believe it!
He lost - the - election.
Why, he'd been in power for years.
We were used to him.
He was comfortable like an old shoe -
always everywhere,
weddings, first and silver, golden,
otherwise - although I don't think
he ever attended divorces,
he went to funerals, school openings,
dam, and bridge ribbon cuttings,
and to foreign lands to drum
up trade for us.
Just everywhere a public dignitary
ought to go, he went.
He had such a pleasant smile -
He was, he is, a damn good man!
I'll miss his cheer, his special something.
And now that I have thought it over
Somehow I wish that I'd got out
and voted.
