Iris pumilla

Spring blooming, brightly coloured little things, can be used as a replacement for or a complement to spring bulbs. The above varieties bloom about mid May in our garden.

Other varieties I have seen are a variety with white blooms with purple highlights, and a variety with wine-red blooms. There are countless more, some of which bloom later in spring.

We grow them in full sun to partial shade. Best I think in full sun. Look fine in rock gardens, too.

Hardy to at least zone 3.

Height varies variety to variety, the ones above run from 4" to 8" in height. Will spread to form patches 12" in diameter.

Glen's score:  7.

A 'Thank You' to our friend Frank for giving us these fine plants.
