Classic rock garden plants, this variety of Helianthemum has a showy combination of greyish foliage and orange flowers. I really like this genus of plants.
I have been mostly unsuccessful in overwintering Helianthemum in the past, I was very happy to see this plant survive the winter of 1999-2000 (which was a mild winter here, perhaps explaining why it overwintered). In the past, our very cold, sunny days in winter have desiccated these plants so badly that they die.
For an red-orange plant with similar effect in the rock garden, I now grow the hardy Sphaeralcea coccinea instead of these tender Helianthemums.
For full sun, sharp drainage.
Height of 6" to 8", spread to 18" in its 2nd
year.
Hardy zone 4.
Glen's score: 8.
