Vaccinium vitus-idaea - photos and description

Saskatchewan's Wildflowers

Low shrub with decumbent to erect growth habit. Flowers are white, bell-shaped, grow in a panicle we measured a flower to be 5 mm long. Leaves are alternate, waxy, obovate, leaf highlighted in photo above was measured at 9 mm long and 5 mm wide. Plants glabrous.

Found growing in spaghnum bogs in the Boreal forest. Common. Produces small reddish-green berries in late summer that are edible, but quite tart.

Plants are available commercially and have tried growing them a couple of times in our garden. Our soil is not acidic enough for them, they die after a couple of years.

Height listed in Budd's Flora to 20 cm, we measured plants to 6 cm tall.

Took the above photos on June 18th and July 2nd in bogs Hudson Bay district, about 400 km north east of our home in Regina, Saskatchewan.
