Spiraea betulifolia - photos and description

Saskatchewan's Wildflowers

Low growing shrub to 60 cm tall, stem ends growing horizontally to the ground. Flower is a flat topped, dense panicle of white flowers. Flowers with small red dots on the petals, panicle to 8 cm across. Leaves are obovate, alternate, toothed, to 9 cm long and 4 cm across.

Habitat is forest in the Cypress Hills.

Though locally abundant, is listed as rare in the province, with S2S3 designation by the Saskatchewan Conservation Data Centre.

Photos taken August 3rd in lodgepole pine forest the Cypress Hills, about 450 km southwest of our home in Regina, SK.
