Salsola australis - photos and description

Saskatchewan's Wildflowers

Annual plant with a much branched growth habit, and showy red flowers appearing in the leaf axils in June. Reddish stems. Budd's Flora describes the early leaves as threadlike and soft (shown above), later leaves shorter and spine tipped. Plants eventually break off at ground level and tumble about - scattering their seed.

Introduced, noxious weed. Commonly found on light soils.

The above photos were taken mid June in sandy soil along the #1 Highway, near Piapot, SK, about 300 km west of our home in Regina, SK.
