Opuntia polyacantha - photos and description

Saskatchewan's Wildflowers

Prostrate growth habit, long spines I measured spines to 3.5 cm long. Pads cuneate to orbicular, to 8 cm wide and 9 cm long. Flowers waxy, bright yellow to 7 cm diameter. Can grow into clumps of many plants. Very common in southern Saskatchewan, especially so on dry prairie, hillsides, badlands, and light soils.

Took the above photos on a stony clay hillside, June 20th, Buffalo Grass Eco Reserve, 200 km southeast of Regina, SK, and June 26th, clay flats near Claybank, about 70 km south of our home in Regina, SK.
