Opuntia polyacantha - photos and description

Saskatchewan's Wildflowers

Prostrate growth habit, long spines I measured spines to 3.5 cm long. Pads cuneate to orbicular, to 8 cm wide and 9 cm long. Flowers waxy, bright yellow to 7 cm diameter. Can grow into clumps of many plants. Very common in southern Saskatchewan, especially so on dry prairie, hillsides, badlands, and light soils.

Took the above photos on a stoney clay hillside, June 20th, Buffalo Grass Eco Reserve, 200 km southeast of Regina, SK.
