Lupinus argenteus - photos and description

Saskatchewan's Wildflowers

Shrubby, branching growth habit, big plants we measured them to 90 cm tall. Lower stems woody. Foliage colour varies from light green to silver. Leaves are digitate, leaves to 6.5 cm diameter. Up to 8 leaflets - leaflets lanceolate 3.5 cm long, 5 mm wide.

Flowers purple blue in a long raceme, to 25 cm long. Individual flowers 1 cm long.

Bottom and top of leaves hairy, stems with appresed hairs.

Habitat is grassy uplands in SW Saskatchewan, particularly the Cypress Hills.

Rare, listed as an S3 by the Saskatchewan Conservation Data Centre.

The above photos were taken on July 12th, centre and west blocks of the Cypress Hills Provincial Park, 450 km SW of our home in Regina, SK.
