Stems with hairs

Low growing plant with erect flowring stems. Basal leaves oval to round, crenate, measured to 25 mm long with petiole, and 15 mm wide. Stem leaves deeply cleft, sessile, upper stem leaves in whorls, linear in profile. Flowers bright yellow, to 2 cm diameter, the petals widely spaced. Stems and leaves hairy.

Very early flowering species. Common.

Identifying this species - hairy stems, early flowering, petals widely spaced, basal leaves oval shaped and crenate.

Budd's Flora lists height from 15 to 45 (!) cm, we measured plants from 4.5 to 11 cm tall.

Habitat is open woods and grassland.

We took the above photos April 28th, grassy hiking paths amid aspen woods, White Butte, 20 km east of Regina, SK.
