Maianthemum trifolium - photos and description

Saskatchewan's Wildflowers

Small, erect plant plant with alternate, oblong-lovate stalkless leaves clasping the stem. Leaves usually 2 are visible, often a third growing just beneath the spaghnum moss. I measured a typical leaf to be 8 cm long, and 2.5 cm wide. Flowers are small, white, 3 petals and 3 sepals, and found in a loose raceme. Flowers measured to 8 mm in diameter.

Height listed in Budd's Flora to 30 cm, we measured plants to 16 cm tall.

Habitat is in wet woods and bogs, growing in sphagnum moss. Common.

Took the above photos June 5th and June 18th, in a pitcher plant bog, near Hudson Bay, SK, about 400 km north east of our home in Regina, SK.
