Seed stage, plant earns its common name "Prairie Smoke"

Erect perennial with reddish flowers (sepals red, petals cream coloured) always appearing in groups of three. Flowers to 3.5 cm in diameter. Flowering stem of plant in photo was 23 cm tall. Basal leaves are pinnate, mostly prostrate, 3.5 cm wide, comprised of wedge-shaped leaflets, dark green.

All parts of the plant hairy.

Common to our Prairies and Parklands.

Photos taken May 13th on the prairie slopes of the Qu'Appelle River valley, about 35 km north of our home in Regina, SK, and June 5th on grassland near Preeceville about 300 km north east of our home in Regina, SK.
