Dodecatheon pulchellum - photos and description

Saskatchewan's Wildflowers

Erect hairless plant bearing showy pink flowers in a small umbel on the end of red stems. Petals are reflexed. Plant is glabrous.

Leaves are all basal, spatulate, to 8 cm long with petiole and 2 cm wide.

I measured plants to 34 cm tall.

Distinguished from our other native Shooting Star, D. conjugens by:

- Petals less than 1.5 cm in length, D. conjugens > 1.5 cm (Taxonomic Reminder forRecognizing Saskatchewan Plants)
- Leaves glabrous, D. conjugens has leaves bearing tiny hairs.
- Wildflowers Across the Prairies lists D. conjugens blooming in May and D. pulchellum in June, but I've photographed both plants blooming in May.

Found in moist, saline prairie meadows.

Photos taken May 27th in a moist meadow 30 km SE of our home in Regina, SK
