Cornus canadensis - photos and description

Saskatchewan's Wildflowers

Single stemmed plant from creeping rootstalks. Lower leaves opposite, and a whorl of 4 to 6 leaves at top of stem. Leaves obovate, glossy, quite noticeable veining. Leaves to 7 cm long and 4 cm wide. Flowers with 4 white, petal-like bracts from top of stem. Flower to 4.5 cm wide. Stems hairy, bottom and top of leaves sparsely hairy.

Very common in Saskatchewan's forests. Often found in large colonies.

I measured plants to 25 cm tall.

Took the above photos on June 25th, mossy spruce woods, south of La Ronge, about 600 km north of our home in Regina, SK.
