Comarum palustre - photos and description

Decumbent stems from a creeping, woody rootstalk. Leaves pinnate, with typically 5 leaflets, the leaflets toothed, green above and whitish below. Leaflet measured at 4 cm long and 1.5 cm wide. Leaves to 10 cm long with petiole, and 7 cm wide when flattened. Stems sparsely hairy above and glabrous below. Flowers comprised of 5 small reddish pink petals and 5 large reddish brown sepals, then greenish brown bracts between the sepals. Flowers to 2.5 cm diameter.

Habitat is marshes and bogs in the boreal forest. Common.

Height listed in Budd's Flora from 10 to 50 cm, the tallest plant in above photos was 33 cm tall.

The above photos were taken on June 28th, in a forest sphagnum bog, south of La Ronge, about 600 km north of our home in Regina, SK
