A low shrubby, much branched plant from a woody rootstalk. Leaves are linear, grey-green, stems are greyish-white. Leaves typically 4 cm long, 1-2 mm wide. Plants glabrous. Inflorescense is comprised of dense terminal panicles of yellow flowers. Flowers are small, star shaped, discoid, 2 mm in diameter.
Often recognizable because of what appears to be a thick, twisting, woody stem, which Budd's Flora of the Canadian Prairie Provinces says is actually its root, which can often appear well above the soil.
Grows in dry badland country in southern Saskatchewan.
Height listed in the field guides to 60 cm, I measured plants to 50 cm tall.
The above photos were taken August 1st, clay badlands, Buffalo Grass Eco Reserve, about 200 km southeast of our home in Regina, SK.
