Astragalus bisculatus - photos and description

Saskatchewan's Wildflowers

Plants form a dense clump of many stems from a central taproot. Flowers are purple red in colour, pendulous, in spikes from leaf axils. Flowers to 15 mm long. Leaves are pinnate, I counted up to 29 leaflets. Leaflets ovate to oblanceolate, to 22 mm long by 10 mm wide. Stems are reddish coloured. Stems finely pubescent, bottom of leaves pubescent. Plants have a heavy, unpleasent smell.

Habitat is dry prairie grassland.

Plant in photograph was 60 cm tall, the field guides list its height to 80 cm.
