Arethusa bulbosa - photos and description

Saskatchewan's Wildflowers

Beautiful, little orchid found in bogs in the boreal forest. Erect, single stemmed plants measured to 20 cm tall. Flowers are bright pink, lower lip very showy, with white and yellow fringed crests. Flower measured to 5 cm long, lower petal 20 mm long by 15 mm wide.

I have observed the flowers are sometimes fragrant.

When flowering, leaves consist of two sheaths clasping the stem. Plants of the Boreal Forest and Aspen Parkland notes that a single leaf on lower half of stem becomes apparent after flowering.

Begins flowering in early to mid June.

Habitat is acidic bogs in the boreal forest.

Very rare, listed as an S1 by the Saskatchewan Conservation Data Centre.

Photos taken June 4th and June 14th in a pitcher plant bog in east-central Saskatchewan.
