Of the plants listed in this website, here are Glen's favourite perennials, annuals, Saskatchewan wildflowers, and ornamental grasses.    



Lewisia cotyledon

 

 Perennials
 Acanthus hungaricus  Spiny flower spikes of pink and white, it's one
 of the more tender plants we've overwintered
 in our garden.
 Athyrium niponicum 'Pictum'  The metallic green colouring of this fern  provides nice colour to the shade garden.
 Campanula x 'Birch Hybrid'  Cheery little plant, covered in blooms in early  summer.
 Cimicifuga r. atropurpurea, and 'Brunette'  An elegant plant with beautiful foliage for a  shade or woodland garden. Very fragfrant  blooms in late summer.
 Echium russicum  Long spikes of reddish flowers, quite nice.  Blooms in June, best in full sun.
 Eriogonum ovalifolium v. nivale   Cusions of striking grey foliage, unique looking
 umbels of yellow-white flowers.
 Filipendula ulmaria 'Variegata'  Eye-catching, gorgeous foliage for your shade  garden. Its dark green leaves look as though  someone had spilled golden paint on them.  Fragrant blooms in summer.
 Heliopsis helianth.'Loraine Sunshine'  Golden yellow blooms are set off nicely against
 eye-catching variegated foliage. Long bloomer.
 Lewisia cotyledon  Tricky to grow, but very vivid little flowers
 make this little plant a favourite of mine.
 Lewisia longipetala hybrid 'Little Plum'  Large, showy flowers, and hardy nature, make
 this a useful Lewisia for the rock garden.
 Meconopsis grandis  Very nice sky-blue flowers.  Tempermental  plant but worth the effort.
 Oenothera tetragona  A blaze of yellow blooms in early summer.  Drought tolerant, easy to grow.
 Penstemon arenicola   Sky blue blooms in June from this rock garden
 plant.
 Perovskia atriplicifolia  Upright growing, attractive grey-green foliage is  covered in lavender bluish blooms in  midsummer.  For a sunny spot in your garden.
 Persicaria affinis 'Dimity'  Wonderful groundcover for sunny gardens.  Foliage is an attractive glossy green. Flower  spikes look great in bloom and even once the  blooms have fallen.
 Primula auricula  A great little plant for the shade. Very showy
 blooms, easy plant to grow.
 Primula cortusoides   Long-blooming Primrose with several dozen
 magenta flowers per plant.

 

 Canadian Prairie Wildflowers

 Arethusa bulbosa  Beautiful, rare orchid.
  Calypso bulbosa  Exotic looking native orchid, quite the plant.
 Chimaphila umbellata  Cute little woodland plant, wish me luck trying
 to grow this from seed.
 Claytonia lanceolata  White flowers with pink stripes, as close to a
 spring bulb as we have here in Saskatchewan.
 Corallorhiza striata   Showy orchid covered with red stripes. A
 saphrophyte, has no green colouring at all.
 Cypripedium parviflorum v. makasin  *  The fragile beauty of this plant makes it a lovely  addition to the garden.
 Cypripedium reginae  *  Very showy native orchid.
 Gentiana affinis  *  Dark blue flowers in late summer.
 Gentiana andrewsii *  Reddish purple to dark blue flowers in late
 summer, remain uniquely closed at their mouth.
 Mertensia lanceolata  *  Pretty sky blue blooms on this tiny prairie
 native.
 Oenothera caespitosa  *  Small plant which produces showy, large white
 flowers in late spring thorugh summer.
 Pedicularis groenlandica   Colourful spikes of purple flowers in early  summer brighten wet forest meadows.
 Penstemon nitidus  *  Very attractive blue flowers and native to some  of the driest locations in the province.
 Pinguicula vulgaris   Rare carnivorous plant with 'neon', bright
 yellow-green leaves.
 Sarracenia purpurea  *  Creepy looking carnivorous plant from forest
 bogs, a challenge to grow in our prairie garden.
 Zigadenus venenosus  Despite it being deadly poisonous, I think it's
one of our most beautiful wildflowers.

 

Annuals
 Anagallis monellii  Easy to grow, beautiful rich blue flowers for this  compact growing annual.
 Dahlia 'Redskin'  Large double blooms set off nicely by its dark  coloured, maroon foliage. Compact size and  carefree nature also endear this plant to me.
 Dimorphotheca sinuata 'Salmon Queen'  These plants add a friendly, happy look to a  flower garden, with their large flowers. Likes a  hot sunny spot, easy to grow.
 Gazania 'Chamsonette Pink'  Large and very showy blooms in shades of
 pink. Yellow and brown centres provide a nice  contrast.
 Gazania 'Sunshine Mixed'  The range of colours and stripes in the blooms  of these Gazanias have to be seen to be  believed. Large flowers, likes it hot and dry.
 Heliotropium arborescens  Large cluster of purple blooms, nice fragrance.  This annual also has attractive, dark green  foliage.
 Lavatera trimestris  Nothing but good qualities - large, showy  blooms, likes hot, dry conditions.
 Lisianthus hybrid 'Echo Mixture'  Large, rose-like blooms in shades of purple,  pink and cream.  Beautiful.
 Phlox drummondii  Many clusters of white red and pink flowers, a
 showy addition to our garden.
 Salvia farinacea 'Victoria'  Easy to grow, with good looking purple-blue  flower spikes.
 Scabiosa 'Ace of Spades'  Something about the dark maroon colour of
 this flower's blooms are irresistable to me.   Easy to grow.
 Zinnia angustifolia 'Crystal White'  Cheery little annual with many white blooms set  against dark green foliage. I find my attention is  drawn to this plant in the garden.

 

 Grasses
 Carex buchananii  Great looking grass, oddly all brown in colour.
 A tidy, non-demanding plant. Definitely a tender  plant for the Canadian prairies.
 Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola'  A beautiful golden colour, with narrow green  stripes. For your shade garden, mixes well with  other shade perennials.
 Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron'  Red coloured grass adds interest to the garden.  This grass looks particulary nice in partial shade  with dappled sunlight striking its red leaves.
 Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster'  Tall, stately grass gives good vertical presence
 in the garden. Its large seed heads look nice
 when blowing back and forth in the wind.
